BMP Kick-Off Luncheon May 18

After two years and a massive effort by nearly 100 people, we will hold our Citrus BMP Kickoff Luncheon Wednesday, May 18, 2005. We will meet at the Putnam’s El Clair Ranch at 11 a.m. for presentations and lunch. The event will last until approximately 1 p.m.

We have assembled a distinguished group of speakers who will address various topics of interest relating to watershed protection. Speakers include Ben Albritton, Chair of the Peace River Manasota (PRMS) BMP process; Lisa Beever, Executive Director of the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program; David More, Executive Director of the Southwest Florida Water Management District; Dr. Harold Browning, Director of the Lake Alfred Citrus Research & Education Center; Jerry Brooks, Deputy Director, Water Resource Management, Florida Department of Environmental Protection; Commissioner of Agriculture and Consumer Services Charles Bronson, and Senator J. D. Alexander.

Selfishly, we think the most important facet of the event will be the introduction and distribution our BMP manual, entitled, Best Management Practices for Citrus Groves in the Peace River and Manasota Basins.

Florida citrus growers must utilize all tools available to them in order to remain competitive. These voluntary practices create reasonable environmental standards for participating growers while maintaining an economically viable farming operation. The practices suggested in the manual have been reviewed by local growers and deemed as acceptable standards for area growers.

Not all BMPs are applicable to all citrus operations. This process allows growers to judge their overall operation to assure their objectives are met, while the BMP achieves its objective of limiting off-site impacts to the environment.

Participation in the BMP process will allow growers to partake in cost share funding options and provides documentation you are using accepted environmentally friendly techniques to produce your crop. Every grower should attend and participate!
